About Kartsport Wellington

KartSport Wellington is an owner-driver club at the 772-metre Kaitoke circuit on Summit Road in Upper Hutt. The track opened in 1978, can be raced in both directions and has a ten-metre elevation change, with club days, scheduled events and member practice forming its core activity. This is not ordinary walk-in rental karting: newcomers are encouraged to watch a race day or use a published Have-a-Go route before progressing through club membership, track-access approval and a KartSport New Zealand licence.

Detailed guide

The Kaitoke kart circuit

KartSport Wellington has raced at Kaitoke since 1978. The current 772m outdoor layout can run in both directions and uses a ten-metre elevation change, with a clubhouse deck overlooking the circuit.

Getting into karting

  • Start by watching: the club recommends attending a race day to meet members and understand the format.
  • Have-a-Go: published trial opportunities provide a route before committing to a kart and membership.
  • Membership: regular track use requires the appropriate KartSport Wellington membership.
  • Licence: racing and approved practice require a current KartSport New Zealand licence.

Practice and safety

  • Do not practise alone: another capable person must be present at the circuit.
  • Separate categories: Cadet, Mini Rok, Junior and Senior sessions cannot be mixed.
  • Protective equipment: drivers and karts must comply with current KartSport New Zealand rules.
  • Track time: sessions are limited when others are waiting, and closure notices override normal access.

Facilities and visiting

  • Club days: the café serves food and drink, with a licensed bar after racing.
  • Spectators: the site has a full-track viewing area, outdoor deck and a gated play area.
  • Parking: two large car parks, trailer spaces and covered kartports are published.
  • Check the calendar: race meetings, working bees and other events can close the circuit to practice.
