About West Coast Karting

West Coast Karting is the adrenaline hub of the Cumbrian coast. Located in Maryport (a short drive from Keswick or Cockermouth), it is widely known as the "largest indoor track in the North West." While modern tracks often move to electric karts and polished floors, West Coast keeps it traditional with petrol engines and a grippy tarmac surface. Because it is fully indoors, it is arguably the most popular wet-weather attraction in the region for families and stag dos escaping the Lake District rain.

Detailed guide

The Track Layout

  • Length: At 520 meters, it is significantly longer than the average 300m indoor track.
  • Design: The track is laid out inside a large industrial hangar. It features a bridge/flyover section, a tunnel, and a mix of tight hairpins and faster sweepers.
  • Surface: It uses tarmac (not polished concrete), so the grip is high and consistent.

The Karts

  • Adults (16+): They run 200cc Petrol Karts. Top speeds are around 40 mph. These are robust and heavy, rewarding smooth steering inputs.
  • Juniors (8-15): A dedicated fleet of 160cc Cadet Karts.
  • Safety: All drivers are provided with race suits, helmets, and gloves. The track uses tyre barriers throughout.

Facilities

  • Viewing Area: There is a balcony viewing area overlooking the track.
  • Food: Basic snacks and drinks (vending style) and pizza options are usually available, but for a proper meal, you are better off heading into Maryport harbour (try the "Catch" fish and chips).
  • Parking: Plenty of free parking on the industrial estate.
