North Yorkshire is a county of "Grand Prix" ambitions. This is not a region for small, slow circuits. It boasts the self-proclaimed "longest kart track in the world" in Middlesbrough, where a single lap can take over a minute, and a highly technical outdoor circuit near Wetherby. For indoor racers, the main hub in York offers a fast petrol-powered challenge just minutes from the city centre.
The undisputed heavyweight champion of the region is Teesside Karting (South Bank, Middlesbrough). Famous for its sheer scale, the full circuit measures a staggering 2.1km, making it one of the longest karting laps in the world. It features high-speed straights, banked corners, and a fully floodlit layout. It runs a massive fleet of Twin-Engine Petrol Karts (390cc/320cc), making it the ultimate destination for serious racers, Iron Man endurance events, and stag dos who want a "Grand Prix" experience rather than a quick indoor spin.
In York, the landscape has changed. The venue formerly known as York MotorSports Village (YMSV) has been acquired by Teamworks Karting (Monks Cross). Now known as Teamworks York, this indoor tarmac track remains the city's primary racing hub. Unlike many city tracks that have switched to electric, this venue currently retains a fleet of petrol karts, offering a fast and physical indoor challenge just minutes from the city centre.
West of York lies Tockwith Karting (Tockwith Autodrome). This is a classic outdoor circuit located on an airfield between York and Wetherby. The 700m track is wide, flat, and very fast. Like Teesside, it specialises in Twin-Engine Pro Karts, which offer significantly better acceleration and torque than standard single-engine rentals. It is a favourite for drivers in Harrogate and Wetherby who want an accessible outdoor race without driving all the way to Middlesbrough.
A Note for Scarborough & Harrogate:
- Scarborough: There are no commercial race tracks on the North Yorkshire coast. Residents typically travel 45-60 minutes inland to Teesside Karting or Tockwith.
- Harrogate: Residents are best served by driving 20 minutes east to Tockwith Karting or south to the tracks in Leeds (West Yorkshire).
